Previous Bible Characters

Hi Kids! We have several stories of Bible characters, who used prayer to get through tough situations.

For younger children: Jacob Gets the Blessing; Jacob Gets Married; Paul Sails for Rome; A Man Who Could Not Walk; Jesus Calls the Disciples; and Halloween Chat.
For older children and teens: What Two Boys Thought About Their Father’s Blessing; How Jacob Was Deceived by Laban; Four Fishermen Who Left Their Nets to Follow Jesus; Why Four Men Tore Up the Roof of a Crowded House; The Story of a Shipwreck; and Halloween Chat.
Halloween Chat

Halloween is at the end of the month -- is there anything in the Bible about dressing in costumes or about tricking or treating?

Well, you can definitely find some characters in the Bible who disguised themselves in order to trick someone, but their actions weren’t connected to Halloween!

I guess that would be pretty funny – if the Bible characters celebrated Halloween! Anyway, which Bible character played a trick?

Remember when Rebekah told Jacob to put on his brother’s clothes?

Oh, yes, and he put goat skins on his arms to make him hairy like his brother Esau.

Jacob did that to trick his dad, Isaac, into giving him the blessing rather than Esau.

Boy, that was a nasty trick to play on Isaac and Esau.

Well, it also didn’t turn out to be much of a treat for Rebekah. She never saw Jacob again. And Jacob spent over 21 years of his life being afraid of Esau. But there’s more to the story – Jacob’s Uncle Laban tricked him.

How did he do that?

On Jacob’s wedding night, he thought he was marrying Rachel, but Uncle Laban switched brides and Jacob ended up marrying Leah.

That wasn’t nice. In fact, how could that happen?

It wasn’t that hard because women wore veils so you only saw their eyes.

Jacob must have been angry.

He was, but he probably thought back to when he had tricked his dad.

Were there any others who disguised themselves?

Oh, sure. For example, when Saul dressed like a common man and went to get some help from the witch of Endor.

I didn’t know there were witches in the Bible! That’s kind of Halloweeny!

Yes, well, this witch talked to dead people and predicted futures. Jesus warned about false prophets dressed up like sheep but really they were like wolves.

What are false prophets?

Anyone promising you something that isn’t good for you or that they can’t deliver.

Like when a friend tells you it’s okay to do something sneaky, because you won’t get caught?

Yes, they may look like a gentle lamb, but underneath that disguise, they’re acting mean by trying to do you harm. So don’t listen.

Do you think we should stay home on Halloween?

No, but we can certainly learn to recognize when we take off the mask we’re wearing.

I guess what you’re saying is that we shouldn’t trick or hurt people at any time.

Right -- wearing costumes can be fun, but not if it hurts someone.

So we can have fun wearing a costume, but we should never forget…

…that we’re God’s children – nothing else but good.

Hey, listen to this: God doesn’t trick us – He treats us.

And God’s treat never runs out. That’s like getting the best part of Halloween all year long!
