Bible First Aid Notebook

Categories: Fear, Jonah

When I was eight years old, my camp counselor asked our cabin to create a Bible First Aid notebook. She explained that whenever we were in trouble, we should be able to connect with God through a statement of truth from the Bible. For example when a challenge arises, we can know that:

Ps 46:1
God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

We can always depend on God to deliver us from trouble.

Some of the Bible verses in my notebook include:

When you just don’t see how you can accomplish anything, know that:

Phil 4:13
I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.

If you are afraid, think to yourself:

Ps 56:3,4
What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee. In God I will praise his word, in God I have put my trust; I will not fear what flesh can do unto me.

II Tim 1:7
For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

Luke 12:32
Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom.

Ask your students to purchase a notebook where they can start saving the Bible verses that will help them in times of trouble. Or you might purchase a notebook for each member of the class and provide them with some of your favorites on the first few pages.

Use the above verses to handle fear.

Whenever you don’t feel you are smart enough to get a task accomplished, you can open the Bible to:

Ps 19:7
The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple.

Through the years, I’ve had numerous Sunday School classes create a Bible First Aid book.

Getting started:

  • Purchase notebooks for each child
  • Bring index cards to class
    • Have each student write a problem on an index card
    • Use a concordance to the Bible to look up words that help you find verses to handle the problem
    • List the problem and write the corresponding Bible verse

Other examples:
When you feel you are in danger – call on the Biblical 9-1-1 – Ps 91:1 -16
When you leave home – Ps. 121:1-8
If you need comfort – John 14:1-3

This activity can go on for years. Set aside five to ten minutes of class each Sunday during the summer to help your pupils get started. Then select the first Sunday of the month to share what they are including in their notebooks as well as to add a few more verses.

I still have the one I started many years ago at camp. It is a treasure trove of Bible verses that I eventually committed to memory so I’d always have them close at hand, proving God is a very present help in trouble.
