- Manasseh is the first son of Joseph and Asenath.
- His name means “forgetful.”
- Joseph takes his two sons to see his father.
- Jacob adopts them and blesses them.
- This means that Manasseh will be considered equal to Jacob’s other sons.
- Manasseh is the ancestor of the Tribe of Manasseh.
- The tribe increases by 20,000 men during the years they were in the wilderness.
- Around 1200 BCE, Joshua divides the land among the tribes.
- Manasseh occupies land on both sides of the Jordan River.
- The two sides are almost completely disconnected.
- The western half is immediately north of Ephraim.
- The eastern half is where the the northernmost tribe lives - on the east side of the Jordan.
- Both lands have lots of water, which makes them very valuable to the northern kingdom.
- The Assyrians capture the eastern territory in 732 BCE.
- The western territory is captured in 723 BCE.
- All the inhabitants are resettled in Assyria.
- Some believe that the Samaritans are descendants from this tribe.
