Baseball Bulletin Board (Sunday School Bulletin Board)

Categories: Sunday School Bulletin Boards

Baseball Season begins in March or April and ends in October. Baseball celebrates qualities like strength, accuracy, fair play, good sportsmanship, teamwork, etc. A Baseball Bulletin Board helps bring a spirit of togetherness to a group.

One of the best Bible quotes about children is from Zechariah.

And the streets of the city shall be full of boys and girls playing in the streets thereof. Zech 8:5

There are other good passages about "play," but mostly they concern playing an instrument.

And they rose up early on the morrow, and offered burnt offerings, and brought peace offerings; and the people sat down to eat and to drink, and rose up to play. Ex 32:6

And Saul said unto his servants, Provide me now a man that can play well, and bring him to me. I Sam 16:17

And Abner said to Joab, Let the young men now arise, and play before us. And Joab said, Let them arise. II Sam 2:14

And David said unto Michal, It was before the Lord, which chose me before thy father, and before all his house, to appoint me ruler over the people of the Lord, over Israel: therefore will I play before the Lord. II Sam 6:21

And David and all Israel played before God with all their might, and with singing, and with harps, and with psalteries, and with timbrels, and with cymbals, and with trumpets. I Chron 13:8

Sing unto him a new song; play skillfully with a loud noise. Ps 33:3

Here's a quote from a Frederick Faber Hymn: God is on the field, although He seems invisible. Hymn 86:2

There are plenty of popular phrases associated with baseball: Bases Loaded; Step up to the Plate; Root for the Home Team; Big Leaguers; Team Spirit; Knock it out of the Park; All Stars, etc.

Quotes about springtime and summer are also appropriate. ...ye know that summer is nigh. Matt 24:32

If your group has a sense of humor, you can add funny quotes from famous players, like Yogi Berra: "It ain't over till it's over." "You can observe a lot by watching." "If the world were perfect, it wouldn't be."

Or famous comedians, like Abbott and Costello, "Who's on First?"

You can have some fun making up fictitious places where baseball is found in the Bible. For instance:

"In the Big Inning" Genesis 1:1
Rebekah went to the well with the pitcher - Genesis
Boaz found Ruth out in left field - Ruth
Goliath was struck out by David - I Samuel
The Prodigal Son made a run home - Luke

Baseball pictures can be found in magazines, calendars, art by Norman Rockwell, on the internet, etc. You can create your own pictures. Bring props such as ball caps, uniforms, balls, and bats, and take pictures of members of the family or church or synagogue members of all ages. They can be playing an actual game or posing in a yard or field. Take pictures of them individually. I have provided a template for a baseball, which can be duplicated many times and glued onto colored circles. With small scissors, trim around the people in your pictures and glue them onto the baseballs, which then become frames for your team members. They can be placed in a line across your board, in a circle around the border, or in a diamond shape. You could even give your team a clever name.

Common Denominators for most Bulletin Boards:
In my experience, a computer, a printer, a paper cutter and a digital camera are four helpful tools for making bulletin boards.

Measure the space on your board. Cut a piece of string equal to the length of the perimeter.

Place the string on the floor in the shape of the board. Arrange the pictures or items for your bulletin board inside the string diagram as you would like them to appear on the bulletin board. You might want to cover your board with fabric before you begin to affix the pictures or items on the board, although this is not necessary.

Bulletin boards always look best when pictures have been glued onto another piece of paper: it smooths and stiffens each picture. And colored borders around the edges of pictures help unify the board.

My favorite spray glue is available at hardware stores - 3M Super 77 Multipurpose Adhesive. It is handy for all my bulletin boards. Another indispensable item is my "glue box" - an old cardboard box. Mine measures 17" long x 13" wide x 14" deep and has a top that folds closed. It is advised that gluing be done outdoors or in the garage. To begin, line the bottom of the glue box with newspaper and place 2 of the pictures face down in the bottom. The idea is to shake the glue can, and spray the backs of the pictures, but not forcefully or they will blow around. Most importantly, close the box immediately to contain the overspray and the odor. Change the newspaper after each spray.

Take a picture of your finished product on the floor or a table. This will aid in the placement of your pictures on the actual bulletin board. When your bulletin board is ready for public display, be sure to take a picture! Send it to Biblewise.com so that we can see how you have used these ideas and added your own flair.
