The Baby in a Basket
Exodus 1:1-2:10
The new Pharaoh was a
wicked king. When he made the Israelites into slaves, he made
a new rule: "If an Israelite family gives birth to a
baby boy, the baby must be thrown into the Nile River. Only
baby girls can live.
One Israelite mother did
not want to hurt her baby boy. At first she hid him so he
would not be found. But when he was three months old, he had
become to big and noisy to hide.
The mother decided to
make a basket and cover it with tar and pitch. Then she put
her baby in the basket, and let it float on the river. The
baby boy's sister quietly hid herself in the reeds along the
riverbank. She wanted to see what would happen to him.
Just then Pharaoh's daughter
went to the river and saw the baby in the basket. He was crying,
and she felt sorry for him.
When the Pharaoh's daughter
picked up the baby, the boy's sister came up and asked, "Would
you like me to get an Israelite mother to nurse him for you?"
"Yes," said
the Pharaoh's daughter.
Guess which mother the
sister got? Their own mother! So the baby's mother was allowed
to take care of Moses until he was old enough to live with
the Pharaoh's daughter.
