A Healing of Cold Symptoms

A mom refused to let sore throat and cold symptoms take over her life. Rather, she trusted that God's protecting power kept her safe – which resulted in healing.

One evening as I was putting our house back in order after a fun party, I found myself fighting a sore throat. It had been a very full, but joyous week. One of the week's activities was taking care of and praying for my daughter, who had a runny nose. She had had a great time at the party, however. Her spirits were soaring.

But now, I was feeling cold symptoms coming on, and I didn't like it! I mentioned this to a friend that evening, who told me, "You can't be punished for taking care of your children." That is the truth. I asked her for some spiritual prayer and support. I went to bed trusting that God was my best defense.

The next day, I was a little congested, but I refused to feel frustrated. I simply would not let it take over my life. I have been studying Exodus. The part about the plagues has never been my favorite, but I've come to appreciate the story in a new way. Rather than focusing on the destruction, I saw God's protection. The land of Goshen, where the Israelites lived, was completely protected from all the plagues, as were all of Goshen's inhabitants. Flies, frogs, gnats, disease, locusts, death, etc. did not touch them at all. They were totally safe – in God's care.

Psalm 91 echoes this sense of safety:

Those who live in the shelter of the Most High
will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty….
For he will rescue you from every trap
and protect you from deadly disease….
His faithful promises are your armor and protection….
Do not dread the disease that stalks in darkness,
nor the disaster that strikes at midday.
… these evils will not touch you. (91:1,3,4,6,7 NLT)

These are not idle words. They are true and powerful. I knew I was totally safe in God's care. Cold, stress, tiredness, etc. – the "enemies" or "evils" – could not touch me. God has promised me blessings. I didn't have to be concerned that a pure child of God could give me a cold. No way! The only thing she could give me was joy, for she is definitely one of the greatest blessings in my life. By the end of the day, all cold symptoms had left.

The following evening, my ear started to act up, to feel congested. Again, I knew that nothing could block healing, nothing could keep me from hearing God's word, nothing could interfere with God's communication to me. When I awoke the next morning, I was completely free.

How grateful I am to know that "God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble" (Ps 46:1 NIV). God's healing truths are applicable to our daily lives. God does indeed answer our prayers and keep us safe, whole, and well.
