Having Trouble Sleeping
By Estey Silva
There you are, lying in bed, ruminating… . Maybe it's over the next day's math test. Or over what that one girl said about you in the bathroom—she didn't realize you were in one of the stalls. Ouch, that hurt. Now you roll over, fluff the pillows, and try to get comfortable. Maybe you even try that old trick of counting sheep. But it doesn't work. Sigh. You get up and get a glass of water, re-fluff the pillows, and try not to look at the clock again because it's really late, and you know you're going to be exhausted in the morning if you don't get some rest.
Does this sound familiar? It doesn't have to.
Did you know that you can pray about sleep?
There are some really great Bible verses that relate to sleep. Here are a few I found especially comforting when I was struggling with stress and lack of sleep a few years ago. They're great affirmations for anytime you have trouble sleeping.
When you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet. (Prov 3:24 NIV)
Expect that your sleep will be sweet every night, even if you have some trouble sleeping the previous night. Always expect good.
In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, O Lord, will keep me safe. (Ps 4:8 NLT)
God keeps you safe, watching over you always, whether you're asleep or awake. Trust that all is well; close your eyes; and let your mind relax as you breathe deeply … and calmly fall asleep.
I sleep and wake up refreshed because you, Lord, protect me. (Ps 3:5 CEV)
Not only can you expect to sleep well, you can expect to feel completely refreshed and ready for the next day—no snooze button needed!
As you're falling asleep tonight, think about these three Bible verses. Silently and confidently affirm them as you snuggle up with your blankets and pillows. And if you wake up in the middle of the night, read them off your phone, or write them on a sticky note by your nightstand for easy access. You'll be back to sleep in no time.
Know that you're not alone—God is right there with you, giving you peace. Let the stress of the day fade away as you reassure yourself with these spiritual truths.
You have a right to a good night's sleep. It comes straight from God, who watches over you while you rest! |
